Diebold Nixdorf, a leading provider of retail solutions catering to over 150 retailers globally, has officially initiated the rollout of its innovative AI-based checkout solutions, as showcased at the recent NRF Big Show. This state-of-the-art technology, named “Vynamic® Smart Vision I Shrink Reduction,” aims to address and prevent common sources of loss at both self-service and traditional point-of-sale (POS) checkouts.

The newly introduced Smart Vision technology, powered by AI and machine learning through SeeChange’s cloud platform, serves as a comprehensive solution to combat shrinkage issues at checkout points. This technology seamlessly integrates with Diebold Nixdorf’s existing AI-based solutions, which focus on minimizing friction during processes like fresh produce scanning and age verification for restricted sales.

  1. Combatting Loss Scenarios: The AI-based offering is equipped to reduce loss across high-priority shrink scenarios at checkout, addressing issues like theft, unintentional non-scanning of items, and situations where shoppers manipulate barcodes, ensuring a secure and efficient checkout process.
  2. Age Verification for Restricted Sales: The technology autonomously verifies a shopper’s age, a legal requirement for certain purchases, reducing the need for employee intervention. The system estimates the consumer’s age in real-time through a consumer-facing camera with the shopper’s consent, ensuring a swift and private verification process.
  3. Identifying Fresh Produce: Diebold Nixdorf’s AI-equipped self-checkouts enhance the purchase process for fresh produce priced by weight or quantity. Using computer vision and trained algorithms, the system identifies the produce and quantity, streamlining the checkout process and preventing misidentified items.
