BBVA, a leading financial institution, has been strategically bolstering its technology talent acquisition initiatives over the past three years, aiming to attract top-notch professionals in high-demand fields such as engineering, mathematics, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and data management. In a bid to reinforce its technological capabilities, BBVA launched a new global software development division at the close of 2021, comprising over 16,000 developers across the Group. The subsequent year witnessed a significant recruitment drive, with 3,279 new hires, including 1,008 in Spain alone, underscoring the bank’s commitment to fostering talent on a global scale.
In 2023, BBVA continued its momentum by recruiting over 3,908 professionals in STEM fields and data and engineering domains, with 1,259 hires in Spain. The introduction of the ONE project revolutionized software development practices, promoting collaboration and knowledge-sharing among engineers, both internally and within the industry. Furthermore, the establishment of BBVA Technology in Europe consolidated the Group’s technological prowess, while expanding its footprint with the launch of BBVA Technology in the Americas in 2024.
Recognizing the importance of a robust recruitment platform, BBVA unveiled a dedicated job portal aimed at attracting tech-savvy individuals across its operational regions. This initiative seeks to showcase the bank’s commitment to technological advancement and innovation, with plans to onboard approximately 2,700 technology experts this year alone.
Pedro J. Méndez, Head of Talent and Culture for the Engineering area at BBVA, noted that: “Architecture, data, cybersecurity and infrastructure are the areas in which the most people have been hired over the past year.”
Talent is one of the essential pillars of the Engineering area’s strategy, which is based on developing a unique model with a career plan and personalized training. “A long-term career plan is offered, with a flexible work model, the training programs at the highest level, a commitment to diversity, inclusion and the physical and mental well-being of all professionals,” explained the Head of Talent and Culture for the Engineering area. Furthermore, these professionals work with cutting-edge technologies from BBVA’s main strategic technology partners on challenging projects in fields, such as development and architecture, security, fraud, infrastructure and data.
