Amazon Introduces “Badge Pay” to Revolutionize Hospital Retail with Just Walk Out Technology

Amazon takes another stride in revolutionizing retail convenience with the introduction of “Badge Pay” to its Just Walk Out technology, catering specifically to healthcare settings. Developed to address the universal frustration of waiting in lines, Just Walk Out utilizes computer vision, sensor fusion, and generative artificial intelligence (generative AI) to enable customers to shop seamlessly and automatically pay for their purchases. The technology has been extended to over 120 third-party locations worldwide, including airports, stadiums, university campuses, grocery stores, theme parks, and cafes.

St. Joseph’s/Candler at its Candler Hospital Campus in Savannah, Georgia, becomes the first U.S. hospital to embrace Just Walk Out technology with the added feature of “Badge Pay.” The new capability allows healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, and staff, to enjoy 24/7 access to food and beverages by scanning their employee badges at the entry pedestal, shopping freely, and leaving without the need for payment lines. The purchase amount is automatically deducted from their payroll deduct account, linking employee badges to payroll for a seamless experience.

“Amazon’s Just Walk Out technology supports our smart medicine strategy by providing high-tech solutions to our patients, visitors, and co-workers, even with food service,” said Paul P. Hinchey, president and CEO of St. Joseph’s/Candler. The technology addresses challenges faced by hospital staff during overnight shifts, providing them with quick and easy access to food at any hour.

Morrison Healthcare, a prominent food and nutrition provider operating the Just Walk Out technology store at Candler Hospital, commends the forward-looking approach. “Just Walk Out technology brings a forward-looking approach to hospital food access to better serve both caregivers and guests,” said Tim Pierce, CEO of Morrison Healthcare.

The introduction of “Badge Pay” is part of Amazon’s commitment to enhancing the checkout-free shopping experience. The innovative feature expands the capabilities of Just Walk Out technology, catering to the diverse needs of retailers and customers. As the technology continues to evolve, with advancements like new sensor capabilities, multiple store formats, and flexible payment options, it reaffirms Amazon’s dedication to providing cutting-edge retail solutions while preserving customer privacy.
